Collect Your Vehicle & Credit Details
For Form 8910, gather the vehicle identification number (VIN), acquisition and in-service dates, purchase/lease price, and vehicle type (fuel cell, hybrid, plug-in, etc.). If you have a manufacturer/distributor certification showing the tentative credit, keep that too. If any business use applies, note total vs. business miles. With everything in one place, you’ll move through the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit quickly and accurately.
Details worth checking
Invalid or Mistyped VIN (Line 2)
An incorrect VIN (wrong length, forbidden characters like I/O/Q, or a transposed digit) can stall the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit on Form 8910. The VIN ties your claim to a specific vehicle—errors prompt IRS questions and slow refunds.
Tentative Credit Doesn’t Match Certification (Line 4)
Your tentative credit must align with the manufacturer or domestic distributor’s certification for that make/model. Overstating it—even by accident—can reduce or deny your Form 8910 credit and trigger notices.
Business/Investment Use Percentage Calculated Incorrectly (Line 5)
Claiming business credit requires accurate business-use percentage. Using rough guesses or forgetting to base it on miles (business vs. total) can misstate your credit and lead to adjustments.
Forgetting Pass-Through Credits from Partnerships/S Corps (Line 8)
If you received credits via Schedule K-1, missing or mis-totaling them means leaving money on the table or double-counting elsewhere. The IRS expects those pass-through amounts to reconcile with your return.
Timing & Eligibility Errors (Placed-in-Service, Ownership, U.S. Use)
Claiming Form 8910 for vehicles placed in service outside the applicable window, for vehicles you don’t own, or used primarily outside the U.S. can invalidate the credit and invite penalties.
Mismatched ‘Other Credits’ Totals (Line 13) with Schedule 3/Form 5695
Form 8910 interacts with other personal credits. If Line 13 doesn’t agree with Schedule 3 and Form 5695 where required, the IRS may adjust your return or delay processing.
Basis Not Reduced by the Claimed Credit
After you claim the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit, your vehicle’s basis generally must be reduced by the credit amount. Failing to adjust basis can cause future depreciation/sale reporting errors.
Trying to Carry Forward Unused Personal Credit or Missing Recapture
Personal portions of this credit generally cannot be carried back or forward if limited by tax liability, and certain changes may require recapture. Missteps here create underpayment risks.
Poor Recordkeeping & Out-of-Date Rules
Missing invoices, certifications, mileage logs, or relying on outdated guidelines can derail your claim. The IRS can request documentation or apply current-year rules you didn’t follow.
