Gather income and adjustment records
Bring every record of income that isn't wages: 1099-G for unemployment or state refunds, 1099-NEC and 1099-K for business income, rental and royalty records, K-1s, and alimony details for divorces finalized before 2019. For adjustments, have HSA contribution records, IRA contributions, Form 1098-E student loan interest, educator expenses, and self-employed health insurance and retirement contributions.
Details worth checking
State refunds that aren't taxable
A state or local tax refund on Form 1099-G is only taxable if you itemized and got a tax benefit from the deduction the year before.
Amounts that must match other schedules
Business income comes from Schedule C, rental and K-1 income from Schedule E, and capital gains go on Form 1040 itself. Lines on Schedule 1 should match those schedules exactly.
Half of self-employment tax missed
If you had self-employment income, the deductible half of self-employment tax from Schedule SE belongs in Part II.
Adjustments over their limits
Student loan interest, educator expenses and IRA deductions each have caps and income phase-outs. Claiming the full amount without checking them overstates the adjustment.
Totals not carried to Form 1040
Part I and Part II totals flow to Form 1040. A Schedule 1 that's filled in but not carried over changes nothing on the return.
