Gather your business records

Bring your income records (1099-NEC and 1099-K forms, invoices, bank deposits), your expense receipts by category, vehicle mileage logs, home office measurements, and inventory counts if you sell goods. Your EIN, if you have one, and your business code go at the top.

Details worth checking

Income missing from 1099s

Payments that never reached a 1099 are still taxable. The IRS matches 1099-NEC and 1099-K amounts to line 1, so a total lower than your 1099s invites a notice.

Personal expenses claimed as business

Only ordinary and necessary business costs belong on Schedule C. Mixed-use costs such as a phone or a car need a reasonable business share, backed by records.

Vehicle expenses without a mileage log

The standard mileage rate and actual expenses both need a record of business miles. Without one, the deduction is hard to defend.

Home office that doesn't qualify

The space must be used regularly and exclusively for the business. The simplified method and Form 8829 give different results, so compare them.

Forgetting self-employment tax

Net profit from Schedule C flows to Schedule SE. Missing it understates the tax owed.

Wrong accounting method or inventory

Changing between cash and accrual, or skipping cost of goods sold for a product business, changes profit and may need IRS consent.
